It goes without saying that children are our future. Their generation will become our next leaders and they’ll be the ones making decisions about the future of Nepal. By equipping them with the skills and confidence to make good decisions, we’re preparing them and Nepal for a brighter future.
The current education system has not been working in their favour with many students lacking a basic level of education. This is due to poor resources and limited access to trained teachers, among others. You’ll assist with various activities that empower the youth including English lessons and debate sessions to improve their confidence. You’ll also organize fun educational activities that teach younger students vital skills like teamwork and logical thinking.
You’ll live with local host families during your stay in Nepal which will give you a unique insight into the culture and traditions of the country. In your free time, don’t forget to explore the famous Chitwan National Park where you’ll get to see tigers, elephants and rhinos while on safari.

Our Youth Empowerment Project in Nepal is ideal for anyone who is looking to make a real impact on the lives of young children. While volunteering with children in Nepal, you'll be able to see their confidence grow as they learn and interact with you on various topics.
You don’t need any previous experience or qualifications to join. You’ll work alongside qualified teachers who appreciate the extra support in their classroom. Use this opportunity to identify the students in the class who are struggling and maybe needing extra help.
This project runs throughout the year. The longer you stay, the bigger the impact you’ll make on the youth in Nepal.
What will I do on the Nepali Youth Empowerment Project?
As a Youth Empowerment volunteer in Nepal, your efforts will be focused on the teaching and development of young children. Here are a few of the tasks you can expect to do:
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Plan and run English classes
Many of the children in Nepal end up falling behind in class due to overcrowded classrooms. As a teaching assistant, you’ll provide much-needed support to those who are struggling.
You’ll also be able to plan and run English lessons to help improve their language skills. The more you practice with them, the more confident they’ll become.
Run debate and public speaking classes that empower children
You’ll oversee and mediate debate classes. The concept of the debate program helps children understand and respect different people’s opinions. This is fundamental within a democratic society. As you mentor individuals, you’ll see them grow in confidence and develop their speaking skills.
By preparing students from marginalized backgrounds, we’ll give them the skills necessary to one day be involved in political affairs just like their more affluent peers. In time, this will make the democratic decisions reflective of the whole population.
Organize sports and other fun educational activities
The classroom is not the only place you can learn vital life skills. You’ll help organize various educational activities and sporting events that can teach the children different ways of thinking. You can run sporting events that encourage teamwork and strategy. You might even decide to run improv classes that encourage outside the box thinking.
Assist with small scale renovations and school improvements
Children thrive in safe and uplifting learning environments which is why you’ll assist with small scale renovations and school improvements. You’ll lend a hand with the plastering and painting of classrooms and the development of the school grounds through gardens and outdoor games like hopscotch. You can even add final touches like wall murals that teach the children ABCs, 123s and other English words.
Where in Nepal will I be working?
Chitwan
You’ll be based in the district of Nawalparasi in Chitwan. You’ll work in the rural village of Kumarwarti and assist the teachers at a local school. Over 50% of the students come from a special part of the community near the Gandak River. They’re known as the Boote community and are predominantly subsistence fishermen.
You’ll stay with a local host family during your time in Nepal. This is a great way to get to know the culture and the other volunteers. By the time you leave, you’ll have built international friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime.
A typical day volunteering with children in Nepal
You’ll wake up every morning at your host family and enjoy breakfast with the other volunteers. Together, you’ll walk or cycle to your placement depending on how far away your host family lives. Our staff will accompany you on your first day to ensure you know how to get there and back safely.
The school week in Nepal is from Monday to Saturday, from 8 am to 3 pm. If you’d like the Saturday off, this can also be arranged.
You’ll spend the day running English lessons and encouraging the practice of English skills through debates and writing tasks. You’ll also get to work with younger children where you’ll lead educational games and activities that teach them the alphabet and basic numeracy. You might even get to plan a few sporting events. Volleyball and football are big amongst the older kids!
Over the weekend, you’ll have the chance to travel around the surrounding areas or relax and unwind in the local community. There are many riverside restaurants to enjoy and the famous Chitwan National Park for you to explore.
What are the aims and impact of this project?
The aim of this project is to provide teaching and renovation support at a local school. The school itself receives little to no funding from the government. The funding that it does receive is only enough to cover basic math and Nepali classes, which is not enough.
The school has since become part of the Project's Abroad Foundation and, as a result, receives enough funding to offer additional classes and a more stimulating learning environment. The students all receive a daily nutritious meal, they get to practice debating and they can attend environmental awareness classes, among others.
With your help, we can continue providing students with an education that encourages their involvement in democracy and inspire the leaders of tomorrow.

Management plans
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Measuring our impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Food and accommodation
You'll stay with a host family in Nepal. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Nepal and have a truly unique experience.
We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Leisure activities and free time
When you think of Nepal, the first thing that comes to mind is the majestic Himalayan Mountain Range. This is just one example of the country’s extraordinary natural beauty. Combined with rich cultures, this makes it a unique country to volunteer in and explore.
There are a whole host of ways you can explore the stunning and incredibly varied landscapes of Nepal. You can drive off-road through Chitwan National Park, go biking through Kathmandu Valley, or trek in the foothills of Annapurna.
In the evenings and over weekends, it’s worth taking some time to see the sights in Kathmandu. This includes Durbar Square, where you can stand in the midst of an ancient palace. The towering spectacle of the Boudhanath Stupa is also a must-see.
Nepal is one of our most popular destinations, so there will be many other volunteers in the country with you during your trip. This gives you the freedom to spend your leisure time either exploring alone or in a group.
Safety and staff support
Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
